Skywatchers hit by Leonid meteorites!
According to the Chicago Tribune, Laura Yuran and her 11 year old son Jonathon were gazing at the Leonid meteor shower on November 18th, 2001 when what felt like hailstones began to hit them. As she went to the house to get her husband, Tom, a chunk of rock slammed to the ground near where she had been standing. Tom found two rocks, one imbedded in the ground, which are rust colored on one side and silvery on the other. An astronomer from the Adler Planetarium stated that the rocks are probably from the Leonid meteor storm and that the rust color may be a fusion crust formed during the high speed transit through the atmosphere.
