Petoskey Stone coral reefs resulted from the "mutualistic symbiotic partnership" (i.e. cooperation) between the tiny coral polyps and the photosynthetic algae that resided within their transparent bodies. The polyps provided protection and produced wastes of carbon dioxide and ammonia for the algae. In turn, the algae consumed ammonia and photosynthesized carbon dioxide to make oxygen and sugar for the polyps.
