Colonies of miniscule coral polyps lived within tiny cups of limestone accumulated from sea water through teamwork between the polyps and the photosynthetic algae that lived within their transparent bodies. The collection of limestone cups produced by the colonies made up the mighty reefs of Petoskey Stone that dominated the shallow oceans of Michigan during the Devonian Period of the Paleozoic Era, almost 400 million years ago.
