Fact: In 1900, the flow of the Chicago River was reversed in order to carry human wastes away from, rather than into, the lake. Since 1967, a Supreme Court ruling has limited this diversion out of Lake Michigan to an average of 766.5 billion gallons each year.

If this were the only water lost from the lake and no water was added, this removal would drop water levels by 2 inches.
